Pròiseactan is Iomairtean / Initiatives and Projects

Sgrìobh mi alt air son cuairt-litir Comann Albannach Baile nan Easan, ach cha do dh’fhoillsich an luchd-deasachaidh e air sgàth ‘s nach robh iad air son anarcachas, ana-ghràin-chinnidh, no ana-chalpachas a bhrosnachadh. Ged a bhris sin mo dhùil, tha mi fhathast an dòchas gum b’urrainn dhomhsa is dhan Chomann obair a dhèanamh còmhla ri chèile san àm ri teachd. An dràsta, foillsichidh mi an t-alt an seo. ‘S e liosta a th’ann de na pròiseactan a tha mi air son a chur air dòigh cho fhad ‘s a tha mi ann an Ceanndachaidh. Leughaibh e, agus gun chòrd e ribh!

I wrote an article for the newsletter of the Scottish Society of Louisville, but the editors didn’t publish it because they didn’t want to promote anarchism, anti-racism, or anti-capitalism. Although that disappointed me, I still hope that the Society and I can work together in the future. Presently, I’ll publish the article here. It’s a list of the projects I’d like to get underway while I’m in Kentucky. Read and enjoy!

  • An Comann-Cèilidhe Ceanndachaidheach

Nuair a bhios Covid seachad – mu dheireadh thall! – cuiridh mi buidheann air dòigh air son cèilidhean ullachadh. ‘S a’ Ghàidhlig, tha dà chiall aig an fhacal ‘cèilidh’: air aon làimh, tha e a’ ciallachadh ‘tadhal’, no cruinneachadh neo-fhoirmeil far am bi daoine a’ suidheachadh ann an cearcall a’ roinn òrain is sgeulachdan; agus, air an làimh eile, dannsa ann an stoidhle dùthchasach Albannach a bha ceangailte o thùs ris a chultar Gàidhealach, ach a tha cumanta air feadh na h-Alba an-diugh. Nì an comann seo an dà chuid – cèidhlidhean tradaiseanta agus dannsaichean soisealta. Ma tha sibh air son pàirt a ghabhal, faighibh ann an conaltradh tro mheadhan a’ phuist-d aig kentuckygaelic@gmail.com

  • Comann nam Fèilltean

Nì an Comann seo deas-ghnàth dùthchasach air gach latha-fèille Gàidhealach, gu h-àraidh Oidhche Shamhna, Latha Fèille Brìghde, Latha Buidhe Bealltainne, agus Lùnastal. Ma tha ùidh agaibh ann, leigibh fios thugam kentuckygaelic@gmail.com.

  • Eaglais Ghàidhealach Eadar-Eaglaiseach

Ma tha sibh air son seirbhisean eaglaise a dhèanamh tro mheadhan na Gàidhlig, seo an t-iomairt air ur son-sa! Mar phàirt dheth, leughaidh sinn às a’ Bhìoball Gàidhlig, bheir sinn a-mach a’ loidhne ann an dòidh Ghàidhealach, agus seinnidh sinn laoidhean-Dè Gàidhlig. Cuiribh fios do kentuckygaelic@gmail.com ma tha sibh air son a bhith an làthair.

  • Cuairt-litir Air Son na Cùise

Bu toil leam iris a chur air dòigh anns am biodh artaigilean mun Ghàidhlig ann an Ceanndachaidh, agus cuspairean eile ceangailte rithe (ana-ghràin-chinnidh agus ana-chalpachas, mar eiseimpleir). Nam bu toil leibh airteagal a chur a-steach air a son, cuiribh fios do kentuckygaelic@gmail.com.

Sin agaibh e – tha tòrr againn ri dhèanamh, agus bhithinn-sa air leth thoilichte nam bu toil leibh a bhith an sàs. Nì mi fiughair ri cluinntinn bhuaibh!

Scottish Gaelic in Kentucky

Well, friends, I’m back in Kentucky after more than six years in Scotland, and I have big plans: I speak Scottish Gaelic now, and I want to share it! Although I’ll be fairly busy in the future – looking for work, finishing my doctoral thesis, and so forth – I have projects to get underway in order to promote Gaelic in Kentucky, and some of them require your help! On the following list, you’ll see the groups and initiatives which, with a little luck, I’ll establish in Kentucky this year. If you want to take part in any of them, just let me know!

Things already established to some extent:

  • Online Scottish Gaelic classes

I’ve been teaching Scottish Gaelic classes online! Each session costs 20 dollars an hour, or 10 dollars per half-hour; and I can use Zoom, Skype, Facebook, Discord, Google Hangouts or Microsoft Teams according to student preference. Let me know if you’re interested! My email address is atdahm01@gmail.com.

  • Guth na Coimhearsnachd (Voice of the Community)

Guth na Coimhearsnachd (Voice of the Community) is a Scottish Gaelic song group – an informal Gaelic choir that meets weekly to learn Gaelic songs. If you want to take part, find the group’s page on Facebook under the name ‘Guth na Coimhearnsachd’.

  • Dùthchas is Anarcachas ann an Ceanndachaidh (Folk-culture and Anarchism in Kentucky – the podcast)

This podcast is partly through the medium of Gaelic, with a focus on subjects connected to Kentucky (and the Southern US in general) and anarchism. You can listen to it on Spotify or Apple Podcasts.

  • Dùthchas is Anarcachas ann an Ceanndachaidh (Folk-culture and Anarchism in Kentucky – the Facebook group)

This is the Facebook group for the Podcast. It’s on Facebook under the name Dùthchas is Anarcachas ann an Ceanndachaidh.

  • Gaelic in Kentucky (the website)

This website is for supporting the revival of Scottish Gaelic in Kentucky! There’s a blog on it with information about Gaelic events and initiatives happening in Kentucky. You can find it online at kentuckygaelic.com.

  • Gaelic in Kentucky (the Facebook group)

This is a Facebook group with the same goal the website has. It’s searchable on Facebook under the name ‘Gàidhlig ann an Ceanndachaidh’.

Things still to be established:

  • The Kentucky Cèilidh Club

When – at long last! – Covid is over, I’ll put a group together for organizing cèilidhs. In Scottish Gaelic, the word ‘cèilidh’ has two meanings: on the one hand, it means ‘a visit’, or an informal gathering where people sit in a circle sharing songs and stories; and, on the other hand, a dance in a traditional Scottish style originally connected with Gaelic culture, but popular throughout Scotland today.

  • The Feast Society

This Society will enact a traditional ritual on every Gaelic feast day, especially Oidhche Shamhna (Samhain/Halloween), Latha Fèille Brìghde (Imbolc/Candlemas), Latha Buidhe Bealltainne (Beltane/May Day), agus Lùnastal (Lughnasadh/Lammas). If you’re interested in it, let me know at kentuckygaelic@gmail.com.

  • Ecumenical Gaelic Church

If you’d like to do church services through the medium of Scottish Gaelic, this is the initiative for you! As a part of it, we will read from the Scottish Gaelic Bible, engage in Gaelic psalmody, and sing Gaelic hymns. Send word to kentuckygaelic@gmail.com if you’re interested!

  • Newsletter Air Son na Cùise (For the Sake of the Cause)

I would like to start a periodical containing articles about Gaelic in Kentucky and related subjects (anti-racism and anti-capitalism, for example). If you would like to submit an article for it, send word to kentuckygaelic@gmail.com.

There you have it – we have much to do, and I would be delighted if you’d like to be involved. I’ll look forward to hearing from you all!
